Chic_Raul_ista Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 World club championship on the cards The showdown between the best clubs from Europe and the southern hemisphere that many fans have been yearning for might not be that far away. Crusaders v Toulouse? Bulls v Liecester? Leinster v Reds? Supporters from both sides of the equator have long dreamed of the day when we would be treated to a clash between the Heineken Cup and Super Rugby champions. Well, Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty believes a world club championship could be introduced within the next five years. Of course the biggest hurdle in setting up such an event is the current structure of the opposing seasons but McCafferty believes a North v South showdown is almost an inevitability. "The national championship is something to treasure and Europe is very successful," he said. "Ideally we would like to bolt on top of that an international club event, something that answers the question 'who is top dog?' "Is it the Crusaders? Is it the Bulls? Is it Toulouse, Leinster or Saracens? "That would be such a compelling event that sooner or later it will have to happen because people would love to see it. "Club rugby at its best now is every bit as entertaining and enthralling, if not more so, than international rugby. "Season structure is the biggest issue. We have had plenty of indications from our partners and from a TV point of view it would work. "It won't happen before 2015, before the World Cup. There is a possibility it might happen after 2015. It is a matter of the stars coming into alignment to make something possible." PR Quote

Chic_Raul_ista Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Toulon boss off the rails in ref rant Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal can expect to hear from the Ligue Nationale de Rugby's disciplinary officials after making some outrageous statements over the weekend. Boudjellal was fuming after his side's narrow loss in Clermont on Sunday and vented his frustration with some controversial comments aimed at referee Christophe Berdos. "I had my first refereeing sodomy in the [2010] semi-final against Clermont. I've just had my second tonight," he told journalists after the 25-19 loss at Stade Marcel Michelin. "It appeared to hurt the first time but it was just as bad this time. We will review the images not on Youtube but on YouPorn. Clermont are a great team. They did not need it." It's not the first time Boudjellal has taken aim at match officials. He was in hot water in May 2010 when he lashed out after Toulon were beaten by Clermont in the Top 14 semi-finals when prop Davit Zirakaschvili supposedly knocked on when scoring the winning try. This time Boudjellal's anger stems from the yellow card handed to Toulon wing David Smith for an intentional knock on. Berdos was not willing to reply to the criticism. "I don't pay it much attention," Berdos told L'Equipe.. "It's complicated. They are comments said in the heat of the moment...I've always been told if I wanted to be popular, I shouldn't do this job." Boudjellal shouldn't expect the same kind of reaction from the LNR, who slapped Racing Metro loose forward Sebastien Chabal with a 60-day ban and insisted he attend a referring course after comments he made questioning the standard of refereeing in France last year. The Toulon boss wasn't the only one unhappy with the match officials this weekend. Perpignan forwards coach Bernard Goutta slammed referee Jean-Luc Rebollal after USAP's 14-14 draw with Racing Metro at Stade Aime Giral. "We finished with 65 percent of possession and an [opposition] player on the ground at the tryline who snatched the ball as we were about to score on the final whistle," Goutta told l'Independant. "There truly is refereeing at two different speeds - one for the top four and one for the bottom four. We can see this better today now we are in tenth place." *Foden ready to fight for England spot - Ben Foden is under no illusions that he is a dead certainty for an England jersey, with Mike Brown launching a stern challenge. *France call on Nallet - France have added veteran lock Lionel Nallet to their Six Nations squad as a replacement for the injured Romain Millo-Chluski. *Barcella rejects big offer from Toulon - France prop Fabien Barcella has turned down a big-money offer from Toulon and will sign a contract extension with Biarritz. Chic_Raul_ista Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Diamond hits out at Barnes Sale boss Steve Diamond has slammed Wayne Barnes after the referee's controversial penalty call saw his side lose 21-19 to London Irish. In the dying minutes at the Madejski Stadium on Sunday with the score 19-18 in favour of Sale, Barnes awarded the Exiles with a penalty at scrum time, allowing Adrian Jarvis to step up and put the home side into a match-winning lead. Diamond made no secret of his feelings on the matter, criticising Barnes' decision after the game. "I'm not whinging but if the referee is going to make his interpretations, let it be consistent. That's what we are after," he said. "It is hard to take when such a crucial decision is made like that. He has to be 100 per cent right that we wheeled the scrum. He ought to come to a coaching session and see that the wheel went out of the game 10 years ago. "The hardest thing as a coach is we didn't play to our full potential today and the responsibility is on the coaches, players and ourselves. "But, within three minutes (at the end), we could have and should have won the game." Not surprisingly, London Irish coach Toby Booth saw the matter differently. "It was an easy decision for Wayne Barnes," said Booth, calling the penalty a "stonewall" decision. PR Quote
