Django Unchained's Samuel L. Jackson shares Leonardo DiCaprio rapport

January 1 2013

British audiences don't have long to wait until the long awaited release of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and long time collaborator Samuel L Jackson has said that he got on well with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits, the Hollywood legend revealed "We developed a rapport very quickly, having never been in the acting arena together before - we'd seen each other before socially and we knew each other, but it was great to start the rehearsal period with him.

When we were sitting around the table reading, it was great to find out how much he knew about the south, how much he knew about that dynamic between master and slave."

Describing the complex dynamic between DiCaprio's slavemaster character Calvin J Candie and his own slave part Stephen, Jackson added "As we continued to read and develop what was going on there, he sort of took a cue from me in that I'm kind of like a father figure to him in the story, Stephen could lead Calvin into places or try and be this kind of Machiavellian character that allows Calvin to do what he does, while Stephen runs the plantation.

The plantation's essentially Stephen's. He may take orders from Calvin in front of people, but really, we know how this whole thing works. Leo was very open to that dynamic and allowed it to work and form to what we eventually see on the screen.

And sometimes the stuff that happened once we got into costume and make-up and everything else, sometimes that was nothing like what we did in rehearsal, just because the magic of being in that space made it very different. Leo, man, he's fantastic."

Django Unchained opens across the UK on January 18 and features Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, James Remar, Don Johnson, James Russo, Russ Tamblyn, Amber Tamblyn, Bruce Dern, Jonah Hill, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Carradine.

This sites sort of Awards predictions..

The 2012 Next Projection Awards

Best Male Supporting Performance – Leonardo DiCaprio, Django UnchainedWatch

Performance, in a Tarantino film, is like a gift of open expression, allowing actors to go gonzo like they always dreamed but were never permitted. DiCaprio is on a different plane here, sinking his teeth into a role that is so completely un-DiCaprio and loving every second. Not unlike Waltz in Basterds, DiCaprio uses charm as the misdirection before he lets his vitriol fly, thus making the sense of danger all the more lethal. I’d say he’s a shoo-in for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, except he will have stiff competition from yet another standout, Tarantino favorite Samuel L. Jackson. ~JM

Runners Up: Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master and Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained.

Tks for Sydney tweets :)

I notice the person the tweeter was chatting with does the Current Affairs show in Sydney ; wonder if any 'Leo stories' show up on the show this week ? :p

Pink Couture

Tks for great Django premiere clip :)

Kat

Tks for Projection Award winners , happy for Leo , he deserves an award for his outstanding performance as Calvin Candie :)

As to any Vegas sightings of Leo : looking at Twitter I've seen mention of Jamie being at 1Oak last night , but , so far, found no tweets mentioning Leo or Jonah being sighted anywhere

So have no idea where Leo/Jonah rung in the stateside New Year ; maybe another very private party :p

According to Aussie Daily Telegraph article below they didn't ring in the Sydney New Year at the Marquee Club at Star Casino as many thought they might ; supposedly they took another cruise on yacht around Sydney Harbor

IT was billed as the biggest celeb event on the New Year's Eve calendar but Marquee's star-packed bash didn't quite happen as had been hoped - despite early reports Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx would be in attendance.

In fact the A-listers were nowhere to be seen, with partygoers reporting the glitterati were whisked away to Sydney Harbour for a cruise during the evening's celebrations and were not, as expected, among the hundreds partying at The Star's rooftop nightclub.

It's understood DiCaprio and Foxx, as well as portly Superbad star Jonah Hill, were later transported to a private airfield and flown via helicopter to Canberra, where they boarded a chartered flight to Las Vegas to repeat the New Year's Eve festivities.

A few of the clubgoers at Marquee, who had been hoping to clap eyes on the two Django Unchained stars, were disappointed.

Meanwhile, Confidential spied more than a few famous faces amongst the revellers including Jennifer Hawkins and fiance Jake Wall, Glee star Matthew Morrison and Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford.

Tks for Sam's comments about working with Leo :)

Even though you hated their actions/words , I do feel as Sam mentioned that you could tell there was an 'affection' between the two like father /son .

As you could certainly see that Calvin didn't hestitate to take advice from Stephen, and nor did he resent Stephen telling him that he had been played, etc.

Yes, great to see Oscar bloggers predicting Leo for Oscar nod; now we just have to wait and see if their prediction comes true Jan 10th (Y)
