Mourinho set to make Madrid move

Jose Mourinho enjoyed the highlight of his stellar coaching career so far as he led Inter Milan to Champions League glory.

He now looks set to be based in the Spanish capital for the foreseeable future.

The Portuguese became only the third man to lead two different clubs to Europe's top club prize as Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0 on Saturday night, having first won the trophy with Porto in 2004.

However, it looks set to be his last act as Inter coach after he admitted he would hold talks with Real Madrid about becoming their boss for next season.

Inter president Massimo Moratti said yesterday he planned to hold talks with Mourinho to try to persuade him to stay, although his departure for Real now looks highly probable as Mourinho confirmed he would now speak with Real president Florentino Perez.

Moratti, who watched Mourinho lead the club to a Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia treble, said: "We will speak soon. Mourinho returned with the team to Milan on Saturday night.

"I don't think he has signed for another club because he is a serious person.

"Perhaps he has spoken to a team but I hope there is still a margin to convince him to change his mind. I am nevertheless grateful for Mourinho because he has allowed us to win so much.

"Mourinho has brought professionalism and a winning mentality to the club.

"He has great merit and he is an unforgettable person."

Moratti may also have to convince Brazilian full-back Maicon to stay, after he hinted he could join Mourinho in Madrid next season.

"Madrid is a great club and everyone wants to play for big clubs," Maicon said.

Maicon revealed Mourinho informed the players of his imminent departure after the game, but hinted at a future meeting between the two.

"He told everyone he was leaving, so we wish him all the best," he said.

"But he didn't say goodbye to me."

Bayern honorary president Franz Beckenbauer felt the German side would have won the game had France star Franck Ribery not been suspended.

Beckenbauer told Sat.1 television: "We would never have lost with Ribery.

"We missed him on every corner and at the end of everything. It would have been a different game with him.

"Without him, nobody had any courage. You have got to play differently in a final and not have so much respect - you have got to create pressure."

Diego Milito scored a goal in each half to secure Inter's first European Cup success for 45 years.

Mourinho aiming to make Bernabeu 'home'

Jose Mourinho made the Santiago Bernabeu feel like home as he led Inter Milan to victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

And after a house-warming party in Madrid the Portuguese coach revealed he is set to move permanently to the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid have long sought a coach to match their lofty ambitions and Mourinho has long been the man in their sights to return European glory to the Bernabeu.

Following their 250million euro outlay last summer, Madrid themselves had hoped to be celebrating a 10th European crown.

That dream died long ago, but they were the hosts as Mourinho became champion of Europe for a second time and the welcome extended to the Inter coach was for a long-term marriage, not a one-night fling.

After leading Inter to an unprecedented treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League titles last night, Mourinho said: "It was difficult to leave Chelsea and it will be sad to leave Inter. Inter is my home in the same way Chelsea was my home. But that's life, that's football.

"Now I have two homes, Stamford Bridge and San Siro. And now I will have a third home - probably the Santiago Bernabeu."

Pep Guardiola's Barcelona also secured a treble of league, cup and Champions League last year, before going on to win the Spanish and European Supercups and the FIFA World Club Cup to bag a record six titles in 2009.

It was thought that Mourinho, who has collected trophies for fun in his eight years with Porto, Chelsea and Inter, may look to emulate Guardiola and win all six for the Italian side.

But the Portuguese was scathing and dismissive of the other three titles on offer in the next six months ahead of the final on Friday and, having won the important three, he clearly feels now is the time to coach Madrid.

"If you don't coach Real Madrid then you always have a gap in your career," he said.

"Only Real are interested in me but I haven't spoken with anyone and I haven't signed anything. I promised I'd speak after the final."

Mourinho flew back to Milan to celebrate Saturdayt's triumph with his players, but Inter president Massimo Moratti stayed behind in Madrid, probably to thrash out a deal with Real boss Florentino Perez.

Mourinho said he would talk to Perez this week.

"The day after tomorrow (I will speak to him)," he said on Saturday.

"I don't know the project yet, so I have to hear the project. Real is an enormous club, a club that wants the same as me; I want to win, I want to feel important, I want to keep winning."

Mourinho's move looks set to be finalised in the coming days and the focus will then switch to the players the Portuguese will recruit to bring the glory days back to Madrid.

And Inter's matchwinner Diego Milito is one man who could follow Mourinho to the Bernabeu.

"Let's see what happens next year," he said after scoring both of Inter's goals and being named man of the match in last night's final.

The Argentina forward claims he owes his own success to Mourinho.

"I don't have words to describe how grateful I am to the coach for what he has done for me," he said.

"He deserves this more than anybody. He is a great coach and he has worked so hard."

Brazil full-back Maicon is another player tipped to make the move from Milan to Madrid with Mourinho, and the 28 year-old has admitted his interest in a transfer to Real.

"Madrid is a great club and everyone wants to play for big clubs," he said.

Maicon revealed that Mourinho informed the players of his imminent departure after the game, but hinted at a future meeting between the two.

Mourinho, meanwhile, believes he is leaving Inter in safe hands.

"The important thing for Inter is that (club president Massimo) Moratti and (captain Javier) Zanetti stay," he said.

Zanetti, making his 700th appearance for Inter, became the first Argentinian to lift a European Cup as captain.

The 36-year-old, although euphoric at Inter's success, revealed he will be sad to see Mourinho leave.

"I am really sad that Mourinho has decided to leave, but this is his choice," said Zanetti.

"We must respect his decision, and unfortunately we are saying goodbye to a great coach and a great man."

Jose Mourinho is looking forward to working with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid and expects lots of goals from him.

"We are both Portuguese, he is the best player in the world and I am one of the best coaches in the world," The Special One told the Daily Mail.

Mourinho's agent is on the verge of thrashing out the final details of a four year contract worth £36million with Real director Jorge Valdano.

On whether Ronaldo's lavish lifestyle will pose a problem for him, the flamboyant coach readily dismissed it and believes there is nothing wrong and that he deserves it.

"No-one can criticize him if, when he goes on his holidays, he is with Paris Hilton in LA or if he buys a new Ferrari because someone who trains and plays as he does is from another planet.

"He is an historic footballer," Mourinho concluded.

Mourinho issues warning to Galacticos

Ahead of potentially taking over at Real Madrid, coach Jose Mourinho has signaled his intent to build a team rather than a collection of stars.

Mourinho told Portuguese television station TV1 that his agent Jorge Mendes has met with Madrid officials and suggested that the deal is almost a certainty. However, he but added that he wants to meet with Madrid officials first to get a full understanding of the role.

"I want to meet people, know exactly what they want from me and the conditions, not the structures, because these I already know, to avoid any doubts when I begin my work. I think all will be consummated."

According to AS, Mourinho is set to join Madrid later this week on a four year deal worth €10 million per season, a claim that the coach fueled by expressing his excitement over the challenge.

"It's an incentive because everyone says it's a lost cause because my profile doesn't fit Real Madrid or the club does not have the profile that I think a club must have."

The Portugese coach also expressed his desire to continue winning silverware, and emphasized that no player was greater than the team.

"The stars now are Inter, they are the European champions. My message to the players of Real Madrid, if I train them, is that they are not stars, the star is not the coach, the star is the team. If they all accept this like when I was at Porto, Chelsea or Inter, the victories will come."

Mourinho: I need some full-backs

Jose Mourinho has shed some light on areas in the team he believes need strengthening as he begins work at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese was unveiled as the new Madrid boss on a four-year contract, after guiding Inter Milan to a Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble in 2009/10.

And the 47-year-old has wasted no time pinpointing the positions in which he will be looking to bolster his squad over the summer.

"Real has a right-back that I like very much in Sergio Ramos," Mourinho told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

"But in my way of thinking, I believe he can be better as a central defender so we might need a right-back.

"I also would like to have an alternative left-back to Marcelo.

"Marcelo has his characteristics but Real needs a balanced squad, different players for each position.

"I would like a left-back that has different characteristics to Marcelo.

"Real must reach the final of each competition, regardless of whether we win or not, and for that reason, you must have different players for each position.

"Right now, I have a young team with quality players.

"Real always looks for excellence and they find quality players."

Madrid's midfield has been considered by the club's fans throughout the season as their biggest weakness.

"The midfield line is very important," Mourinho said.

"It's difficult to find a complete player in central midfield.

"You have less players box to box. You have more number 10s and defensive midfielders.

"But it's very difficult to find a player in midfield right now that is complete."

As to who the best midfielder in the world is, Mourinho said: "It's difficult to choose who the best is because they play in different football cultures.

"You can't say that (Chelsea's Frank) Lampard will score 30 goals in Serie A or in the Primera Division but in England he averages 28 goals per season, which is incredible.

"You cannot say either that (Barcelona pair) Xavi or Andres Iniesta will perform with the same quality if they were to go to the Premier League or Serie A."

One midfielder who looks to be on his way out of the Bernabeu is Guti.

The 33-year-old announced a month ago his wish to leave the club after 15 seasons, only to change his mind three weeks later and say he wants to see out the remaining year on his contract.

"I like Guti because he has talent," said Mourinho. "But if a player said a month ago that he had played his last game for Real, he cannot come a month later and say that he wants to stay.

"I like players that are committed to the club, the project, his team-mates and the coach and I don't like this doubt."

Mourinho's direct style does not make him universally popular, but he does not believe it necessarily makes him a difficult coach to work with.

"It can be very easy or very difficult to work with me," he said.

"It's true that I see things black or white and those that are not with me are my enemies only in football terms as I respect everyone in life.

"If someone works hard and is aware that the club is more important than all of us, then it's very easy to work with me.

"If a person is egocentric and selfish, has no passion for football and doesn't like to work, it's difficult.

"Practically all my players have adapted well to me and, fortunately, I've been lucky in that respect because that has allowed us to win titles."

Mourinho has been brought to the Bernabeu by president Florentino Perez in a bid to bring the good times back to the Spanish capital, with Barcelona having won La Liga for the past two seasons.

Arriving on the back of a hugely successful stint with Inter, the former Porto and Chelsea manager insists he is not worried by the expectations on his shoulders.

"My pressure is Mourinho on Mourinho," he said.

"That is what I need - not the pressure of the press or the fans.

"You have to put pressure on yourself, to be the best and want more and more from yourself.

"If the day comes when you accept that you don't care about winning or losing any more, and you don't want to be the best, then it's time to go home and not work."

Mourinho's potential transfer targets

Jose Mourinho was unveiled on Monday as the new Real Madrid coach with a mandate to improve the club's fortunes.

The Portuguese has enjoyed success across Europe, most recently at Inter Milan where he claimed the treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League during the 2009/10 season.

Mourinho has already expressed his admiration for England internationals Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, and both will likely be subject to a summer of scrutiny as the 47-year-old sets about reshaping Madrid's squad.

Here are some of the potential transfer targets the incoming Madrid boss will be hoping to lure to the Bernabeu this summer.

Diego Milito

The Argentina hitman has been a firm favourite of Mourinho's since he brought him to Inter last year. Milito will again hope to impress his former coach at the World Cup after an outstanding display in the Champions League final, where he netted both goals in his side's 2-0 win over Bayern Munich.

Milito also scored the winner in the Coppa Italia final against Roma, and was on target as Inter sealed the Serie A title with a 1-0 win at Siena on the final day of the season. A move for the 30-year old would pitch him into direct opposition with his brother Gabriel, who plays for Barcelona.

Ashley Cole

Mourinho has spoken often of his affection for Chelsea and there is a good chance he will look to mount a raid of his former club this summer. Cole is a big admirer of Mourinho, after the Portuguese helped to develop him into one of the best full-backs in world football, and would likely be open to the opportunity to a switch to the Spanish capital once he has returned from World Cup duty with England.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti will certainly not want to part with the 29-year old, but Cole could view any move as a fresh start following a season plagued by negative headlines off the pitch.

Didier Drogba

The Ivory Coast international will be another Chelsea star on Mourinho's radar as he bids to strengthen his forward line. Drogba is currently under contract until 2012 but Chelsea may be tempted to cash-in on the 32-year-old as Ancelotti looks to put his own stamp on the Blues' squad by bringing in new blood to partner Nicolas Anelka in attack.

Drogba would give Madrid more physical strength up front, as well as providing valuable muscle when defending set-pieces. Drogba is yet to win a Champions League title and may view Mourinho as the man best- placed to help him fulfil that ambition.

Maicon

Few will be surprised if the new Madrid boss elects to sign the Inter full-back this summer. Madrid fans may have their misgivings over the defensive mentality Mourinho has shown in Italy, but shoring up the backline will be crucial if Barcelona's dominance is to be broken domestically, and if the club are to improve on their recent below-par showings in the Champions League.

The signing of Maicon, who has pipped Dani Alves to the right-back berth in the Brazil national side, would be a real show of intent in this regard. Maicon could be after a new challenge after completing the treble with Inter, and would add potent a attacking threat down the right channel.

Joe Cole

There is an outside chance that Mourinho could also look to snap up the other Cole in Chelsea's ranks. The midfielder is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer and is known to be weighing up his options ahead of a likely move away from west London.

After the heady spending of last summer, the prospect of signing such a talent on a free will also be attractive to both Mourinho and the Bernabeu board.

Cole has already been linked with moves to Manchester City and Liverpool but is believed to favour staying in London, with Tottenham leading the chase for his signature. However, the chance of a move to Spain to work under Mourinho once again could turn his head.

Jose Mourinho says his main objective is to secure a first Champions League success for the Spanish giants since 2002.

The Portuguese was named as Madrid's ninth manager in just six years on Monday, signing a four-year contract as he took over from Manuel Pellegrini, who was sacked last week.

The Santiago Bernabeu outfit have missed out on their domestic league title in each of the last two seasons to fierce rivals Barcelona, but it was their failure to reach this year's Champions League final, which was held at their own ground, that proved to be the biggest disappointment for the club and its fans.

Mourinho secured his second European Cup, following his 2004 success with Porto, just nine days ago as he led Inter Milan to a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich.

The 47-year-old has set his sights on making history by becoming the first man to win the Champions League with three different clubs, and he wants to accomplish that feat sooner rather than later at his new club.

The former Chelsea boss told realmadrid.com: "I won the Champions League during my second years at Porto and Inter. I reached the semi-finals twice with Chelsea.

"I believe it is the top championship, the hardest of all. We know our challenge here is difficult, but we must be calm as we work.

"I don't like to shield myself in the idea that we need a long time in order to work well. I like to take on a challenge without fear and aggressively. This is why my main objective is to win.

"The magnitude of this club doesn't frighten me. It won't be an easy challenge, but I am anxious to take it on. I am very excited to begin working here."

Mourinho also said that he will look to strengthen the Madrid squad ahead of his first season in charge, but has cautioned against the sort of spending sprees that have led the club's squad to be branded as 'galacticos' in recent years.

Mourinho to Perez: Forget Rooney

New Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has urged club president Florentino Perez to stop trying to sign Wayne Rooney.

Rooney is one of the most admired footballers on the planet at the moment and it is no surprise that Real want to add to their collection of big name signings by bringing the Englishman over.

Mourinho himself has admitted to wanting to coach the player at some point in his career, but according to Sport, the Special One realises that currently it is only a pipe dream.

Rooney is Manchester United through and through and there is as much likelihood of him leaving Old Trafford as Mourinho coaching Dundee United.

Understanding that, the Portuguese has called upon Perez to concentrate on signing Maicon and Diego Milito from Inter Milan and put his Rooney dreams on the back-burner.

Mourinho appoints his Real deputy

Real Madrid have confirmed Jose Mourinho has appointed compatriot Aitor Karanka as his second in command at the Bernabeu.

Karanka joins a coaching team consisting of Rui Faria, Silvino Louro and Jose Morais and, like the trio, has also signed a four-year contract with the Spanish giants.

It is thought his appointment came about because Mourinho wanted someone who - like Giuseppe Baresi at Inter Milan - knew the club well.

Karanka spent five years at Madrid, between 1997 and 2002, helping them to three Champions League trophies and one league title.

The 36-year-old was serving as Spain Under-16 coach, while he was also assistant to Gines Melendez with the Under-17s who have just returned as runners-up from the European championships.

Madrid have thanked the Spanish federation for the ease in which they allowed the Primera Division club to sign the Portuguese coach.
