Norma was a Canadian-American actress born on Aug. 10, 1902 in Montreal. She was one of the most popular actresses from the 1920's until her retirement in 1942. Today she is celebrated as one of films first feminist pioneers. She was the first film actress to make it chic and acceptable to be single and not a virgin onscreen.

Norma moved to New York with her mother and sister in 1920. She started modeling and then became an extra in films for several years. She signed a contract with Louis B. Mayer and when MGM started, she beacame their biggest box office attraction.

In 1930 she won am Academy Award for Best Actress in The Divorcee.

After a few box office flops in the early 40's, she decided to retire.

Norman passed away from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease on June 12, 1983 in Woodland Hills, California.
