Matthew Robert Smith (born 28 October 1982) is an English stage and television actor. An aspiring youth footballer, Smith became an actor in 2003 after a back injury. His first performance was in Murder in the Cathedral as part of the National Youth Theatre. He also starred in Fresh Kills and alongside Christian Slater in the stage adaptation of Swimming with Sharks.

Smith's first television role came in 2006, as Jim Taylor in the BBC adaptations of Phillip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. His first major role in television came in 2007, as Danny in the BBC series Party Animals, and his first West End theatre role came in the same year in Swimming with Sharks, followed a year later by a critically acclaimed performance as Henry in That Face.

In January 2009, Smith was cast to play the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor in the famous British television series Doctor Who, first appearing in part two of The End of Time which aired on 1 January 2010. Smith is now the youngest person to play the Doctor, ahead of Peter Davison, who was 29 when he started playing the role of the fifth Doctor.

I'm only just getting into "Doctor Who", and I've only seen Tennant's episodes (not all, but a decent amount) But I think people will like Matt in about a year's time. Fans just have to accept that each actor is going to have their own thing going on. It would actually be worse if Matt were just trying to do what David did in his performance.

And I must say "Geronimo" being his catch phrase makes me giggle. For good reasons.

I agree completely, believe it or not people didn't like Tennant at first either. (but Tennant is now like Batman there is something, his fans are insannneee.)

I think Matt is so wonderful in this show!

My second favorite Doctor Ever for sure!

I am super excited for Christmas so he can return!

Always thought Tennant was great but when he left, he took Catherine Tate and Billie Piper with him. I was never really a fan of either, so I kind of saw that as a reasonable trade-off and consequently, didn't have any problems taking to Matt.

Ophelia, about half the pics in the Karen Gillan thread have Matt on them too. I could post them in here if you'd like. :)

omg I haaated Billie Piper with such a passion. Horrid actress with a face like a horse haha.

I did however LOVE Catherine Tate, she was hilarious. But my fave companion was Martha Jones :p

Please do Michael, I got lazy I'm afraid haha. Ty!

OH MY! I'm not alone! Thank you! I hate Rose too. She's so annoying, I don't care that Tennant's character falls for her. A friend once told me I should like her just for that alone. <_< Plus Billie for me has this super white trash, trailer park sort of look and sucks at acting. I really like Donna the most, but I have Martha at a close second. Freema seems so underrated amongst the people I converse with.

But back to Matt. I know some people wrote him off as just some pretty boy, but I can see him turning out to be a good Doctor. Would he be as great as Tennant? Maybe not. But like with James Bond, I would rather not compare how each actor chooses to portray him. They're all equally different and, possibly, equally as great.

This made me laugh though:

Sorry Matt! Its just too funny!

He's the one man I've seen in a bow tie where it doesn't look silly. Normally I think they're weird. But I've only seen little tidbits and clips of him on the show, one of these days I should try and watch one of his episodes. My sister told me there's an episode either coming up, or that just happened, where he goes back in time and meets Vincent Van Gogh. I'm interested in what goes on there, hopefully they make Vincent's room look the way it should.

Since I'm stuck with BBC America I need to really keep my eyes peeled for it. I do want to see it, not even just for the sake of seeing how Matt acts but I'm a major art nerd! Double the reason for me to tune in. But like I said I need to keep my eyes open for when they play it. Too bad BBC America kind of sucks, its already hard enough catching when they play Tennant episodes. :(
