Edie Campbell won the inaugural ladies’ charity race at Glorious Goodwood in 2011. Now she wants to reclaim the trophy.

“I am risking life and limb,” the 23-year-old Burberry model says ahead of the race later this month. Edie, who is being courted by Otis Ferry, is hoping to raise £10,000 in sponsorship for The Reading Agency and Best Beginnings. She has two horses, Dolly and Armani, and has toyed with the idea of turning pro. “I’d like to work with horses but it doesn’t pay very well,” she concedes.

FIRST LOOK: Sarah Burton and Vivienne Westwood unveil stylish jockey designs for Glorious Goodwood

  • Designers have created jockey outfits for Glorious Goodwood Magnolia Cup
  • Edie Campbell is 'leading lady' of the event and will compete

There's a supermodel racing in the Glorious Goodwood Magnolia Cup so it only seems fitting that the jockey outfits are hand crafted by high-end designers.

This year, the celebrity charity race has called on renowned fashion designers Sarah Burton and Vivienne Westwood to design riding gear for the cup, which will see model Edie Campbell riding for gold.

Speaking about the cup, sponsored by jewellery designer Theo Fennell, Edie said: 'I am very excited to have taken on the role of leading lady - I'm hoping that we can raise even more money than in previous years - hopefully I'll still be the leading lady at the finish line too!

'I have yet to start my training regime but I can't wait to get into full jockey mode, lots of riding out-of-control racehorses at 7am, surrounded by tiny men on big horses..'

edie campbell, more punk than princess

Edie Campbell is not your typical supermodel. With jet-black hair, ice blue eyes and porcelain skin, she’s more about brains than beauty, and more punk than princess. Now as a gothic horse whisperer in the Alexander McQueen campaign and bringing her...

Edie Campbell wins again at Glorious Goodwood

The British model reclaimed her trophy at the 2014 Magnolia Cup race at Glorious Goodwood

Ladies Day at Glorious Goodwood calls for girl power, both sartorial and equine. Edie Campbell showcased both in an impressive romp to victory in the annual Magnolia Cup.

The supermodel was back in the saddle this year as the official Ladies' Race Ambassador having won the inaugural ladies' celebrity charity race in 2011, and come fourth in 2012. She didn't disappoint, steaming to the finish line on See the Storm wearing a floral silk designed by Vivienne Westwood.

Just rewards came in the form of a Theo Fennell diamond tie pin and a decanter stopped with a silver skull, and a kiss from a Hollywood movie star: Tom Cruise.

Campbell was just focusing on not falling on to him. “My legs were still really wobbly after the race,” she laughed in the parade ring. “A dramatic fall into the arms of Tom Cruise would not have been cool.”

Campbell is a keen rider, with two horses stabled in Warwickshire, and regularly competes in eventing. "I've been training for this race for the past couple of months but the past two weeks has been a lot more intense," she said, swigging on a bottle of water. "I've been riding out with Ian Williams, who has been amazing. I'm just so relieved I managed it."

Her mother, the former Vogue fashion editor Sophie Hicks, admitted her daughter's passion is anomalous. "I really don't know where she gets her love of riding from," she said as she snapped pictures of Edie on her phone. "I haven't a clue about riding myself. It's completely from her - and it's marvellous that she won today."

One person looked rather less enthused by the win and subsequent kiss: her boyfriend Otis Ferry could be heard good-naturedly grumbling about the competition.

Why Winning Wasn't Edie's Biggest Worry

SHE'S stepped naked on to the catwalk for Marc Jacob’s final Louis Vuitton show, and was photographed by Mario Testino when she was barely 18 but, despite her vast fashion experience, Edie Campbell isn't inviolable where nerves are concerned. A consummate rider, Campbell signed up to this year's Magnolia Cup ladies race at Glorious Goodwood, but when she eventually did scoop the prize, she found she had something else to be anxious about.

"I was seriously nervous before the race, and felt quite nauseous," Campbell told us today. "I think it was partly nerves and partly because I had asked so many people to sponsor me and they'd all been very generous, so I sort of wanted to repay them."

"The whole training process is really hard work and involves quite a few people," she went on, "plus I'm just really competitive. So the combination of all those things amounted to hideous race day nerves!"

"It was incredible to win. The physical exertion, the adrenaline; it's all very overwhelming - and those last few seconds of the race when you realise that there's no one else in front of you… It's so exhausting that when I got off the horse I couldn't stand, my legs had completely turned to jelly - and then Tom Cruise appeared, which was very confusing. I had no idea he was there or doing the prize giving! I was a bit worried that my still very wobbly legs would give out underneath me and I would collapse on him, which would look like a really terrible publicity stunt!"
