Eduardo Sanchez Updates Return of the 'Blair Witch'

Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick broke onto the scene back in 1999 when Artisan released The Blair Witch Project unto the world. Banking nearly $250 million worldwide boxoffice, a sequel was quickly rushed into production that failed to make it past $50 million across the globe. Since then, rumors of a third film have freely floating out of the director's mouths.

Following the premiere of Lovely Molly, Bloody Disgusting's Fred Topel caught up with Sanchez who revealed new info on the long-gestured sequel that will bring back many of the original film's actors. The real question is: with found footage being the new "cool," why the hell hasn't Lionsgate pushed this guy off the ground? Maybe this is the year...

Sanchez's ouvre, the 'Blair Witch' creator confirmed he is ready to make a third film to bring the series back from 'Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.' "It's completely up to Lionsgate," Sanchez said. "Dan and I are ready to do it. We've been toying around with a sequel idea that we really like. It's just a matter of getting our schedules in line and having Lionsgate sign off on the idea. We've been ready to do a 'Blair Witch' movie for a long time. We're as close as we've ever been to making it happen but it's still not a guaranteed thing."

Sanchez and Myrick's idea would basically ignore the Joe Berlinger sequel. "I actually liked the sequel but at the same time it exists in a world outside of the movie. So if we want to do a sequel to 'Blair Witch Project,' we have to stay in that world, which 'Book of Shadows' didn't stay in that world. 'Book of Shadows' created a different world. It's like if the sequel to 'Jaws' started with shots of people lined up to see 'Jaws' in the movie theater. For 'Book of Shadows' it worked in a certain way but to me my biggest gripe with Artisan was you shouldn't have called it 'Blair Witch 2.' It would've been fine to call it Blair Witch Chronicles. It wasn't really a sequel to our movie. so it would be a direct sequel to our film living in that mythology of Burkittsville, being possessed, haunted by something."

Now that found footage is passé, a 'Blair Witch 3' would update the storytelling by evolving from the "film student in the woods" style of the original. "Right now, the idea has no first person in it at all, but we'll see," Sanchez said. "There's always room for new ideas to come in."

Expect Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams to make a comeback too, though not as the leads. "The plan is to have them [back]," Sanchez revealed. "They're probably not going to be the main characters but they're definitely characters in the sequel."

That means the sequel may answer questions about the original's ambiguous ending. It certainly can't be a flashback if the actors are all 10 years older now. "No, it's not."

Albert Wesker Even More Badass in 'Resident Evil: Retribution'

Milla Jovovich continues to tweet out cast for the now-filming Resident Evil: Retribution, which shoots in Japan, Toronto and Russia.

She confirms that Shawn Roberts will return as "Albert Wesker" and will be "more badass then ever," adding that "of course its not so easy to kill him!"

Sienna Guillory and Colin Salmon are the other two confirmed cast members, with Paul W.S. Anderson directing from is own screenplay.

'Point Break,' 'Highlander' reboots resurrect action favorites

There can be only ... two?

Just hours after Alcon Entertainment announced its intention to update the 1991 Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze action favorite "Point Break," word came today that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("28 Weeks Later") will direct a reboot of "Highlander," the 1986 cult sci-fi/fantasy film starring Christopher Lambert as an immortal swordsman, for Summit Entertainment. Meaning that a pair of video store favorites for a certain generation will be overhauled with younger moviegoers in mind.

"Highlander," which featured a supporting turn from Sean Connery, spawned movie sequels and even a TV series starring Adrian Paul. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (among the writers of "Iron Man") wrote the script for the remake; RCR Media Group is co-financing the film. No cast has been announced for the project.

The news comes as Fresnadillo’s most recent film, the horror/thriller “Intruders” starring Clive Owen, premiered Monday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In an interview last year with The Times, Summit President Erik Feig talked about the upside of rebooting films from the past: “You get to make a movie that has brand awareness, but you’re not slavishly tied to what has been done before.”

The update of "Point Break" is in the very early stages, but a media release issued Monday said the new version of the film, which was originally directed by Kathryn Bigelow, will be set in the world of "international extreme sports." Warner Bros. will release the new movie. The original required Reeves' California cop to go undercover to infiltrate a gang of bank robbing surfers.

Remakes, of course, continue to be all the rage in Hollywood. Rod Lurie's update of Sam Peckinpah's violent "Straw Dogs" opens in theaters Friday.

Just read they sold the rights for the house of night books to Davis Films. They are the ones that made the resident evil movies. It should be good. They are in the beginning stages of putting the movie together so no casting info or anything. Just that they want to have both known and unknown people. Winona Ryder Confirms ‘Beetlejuice 2’!

Lydia Deetz herself has confirmed that Beetlejuice 2 is happening! In an interview on Late Night With Seth Myers, Winona Ryder spoke about the upcoming sequel, although she wasn’t able to confirm anything more than it’s moving forward and that she’s going to be involved.
Both director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton, who originally played “the ghost with the most”, have been vocal about wanting to return to this character for quite a while.
 

 
Um, I think I can confirm it, because Tim Burton did this interview — like, it was very hush hush, top secret … and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it,’ and I was like [shocked face]

 
The 1988 horror comedy focused on Barbara and Adam Maitland, played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin respectively, who haunt their home after dying in a tragic, yet humorous, car accident. When they’re unable to get the new tenants out of their home, they hire Beetlejuice, a tricksy spookster with his own sinister agenda, to do their job for them.
Beetlejuice is arguably my favorite Tim Burton film. It’s incredibly inventive and wildly out there, which makes for an extremely entertaining and thoroughly quotable film. If they can capture even half of that magic, I’m all in for a sequel!

Nolan's 'Memento' to be remade just 15 years after its release

 

A remake of Christopher Nolan's breakthrough film Memento is in the works. Before he made his Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, Nolan wrote and directed Memento based on a short story by his younger brother, Jonathan. Guy Pearce starred as a man who devises a unique system to help him remember things so he can track down his wife's murderer without being impeded by his short-term memory loss.

Memento opened to widespread critical acclaim in 2000 and earned Nolan an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Just 15 years after its release, production company AMBI Pictures has announced that it has greenlit a new version of Memento, having acquired the remake rights to a catalogue of classic films including Donnie Darko and Cruel Intentions.

AMBI's Monika Bacardi said in a statement: "Memento is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing not just throughout the film, but long after as well, which is a testament to its daring approach. We intend to stay true to Christopher Nolan's vision and deliver a memorable movie that is every bit as edgy, iconic and award-worthy as the original."

"It's a big responsibility to deliver something that lives up to the mastery of the original, but we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers," she added.

Friday the 13th’ Gaining New Momentum!

Plans for a new Camp Crystal Lake are taking shape!

It’s been a long journey back from Hell for Jason Voorhees, who’s been dead since the 2009 Friday the 13th remake hit theaters.

A lot has happened since then. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writers of the Friday the 13th reboot, had originally penned a sequel that would take place in the winter, with Derek Mears returning as the infamous hockey-masked slasher.

Then, Paramount was granted sole rights in exchange for the releasing Interstellar to Warner Bros., and director David Bruckner (V/H/S, The Signal, Southbound) was brought on to develop yet another reboot.

When originally attached, Paramount had wanted to Bruckner’s Friday the 13th to be found-footage, which was hot at Paramount since Paranormal Activity was a cash-cow. Then, new writers were brought on with plans for a 1980’s-themed ensemble piece described as having a Dazed and the Confused vibe.

Things were further complicated when news dropped last December that Aaron Guzikowski would be penning Friday the 13th for Paramount and Platinum Dunes, and that Bruckner was no longer attached.

Guzikowski is a welcome addition to the fold as he’s the writer behind Prisoners, which was one of the hottest screenplays in Hollywood. He is also penning the remake of Universal’s The Wolf Man.

Platinum Dunes producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller were on hand at WonderCon promoting the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. When asked about the next Friday the 13th two things were confirmed:

“There is truth that this is period,” Form told TooFab, without saying which period it’d take place in. Fuller quickly added, “And NOT found-footage.”

“We’re so lucky to have Aaron Guzikowski writing, who is a fan of the franchise,” Form added. “He’s come up with an amazing story and we can’t wait to make this one.”

When Guzikowski was announced as the new writer, it wasn’t clear what the new direction would be. What we know now is that there’s still a plan to have some of, if not all of Friday the 13th take place in a different time period. Found-footage is still off the table. And, more importantly, it sounds as if this is close to happening.

Fuller teased the journalist: “I can tell you I believe there will be a set visit for everybody soon.”

Paramount’s latest release date remains intact, with the studio targeting January 13, 2017.

And the new Han Solo is…

After thousands of actors were considered to portray a younger Han Solo for a “Star Wars” spinoff, Alden Ehrenreich has landed the coveted role.

 

Hollywood sources tell us Ehrenreich has signed on to play the iconic role, made famous by Harrison Ford, in the new movie, slated for 2018, which will focus on Solo before he joined the Rebel Alliance.

 

One insider told us of Ehrenreich, 26, who most recently appeared in “Hail, Caesar!”: “Alden really impressed Disney and Lucasfilm execs with his screen tests. The deal is basically done.”

 

Relatively little-known Ehrenreich — who’s also the lead in Warren Beatty’s upcoming, untitled Howard Hughes project with Fox — beat out candidates including “Divergent” stars Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort, Scott Eastwood, “Kingsman” and “Eddie the Eagle” star Taron Egerton, and “Sing Street” star Jack Reynor.

 

The casting of the Han Solo character has been so shrouded in secrecy it was named “Project Red Cup,” in reference to the ubiquitous red plastic Solo cups.

The Han Solo spinoff is being produced and scripted by Lawrence Kasdan — who co-wrote “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens” — with his son Jon Kasdan, Deadline reported. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is also producing.

 

Kasdan said in a recent Q&A that the spinoff would not delve into the origins of Solo — “It will not be, ‘Here’s where he was born and this is how he was raised.’ I think what it will be is, ‘What was he like 10 years earlier?’ .?.?. But [legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira] Kurosawa once said the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villains are locked and petrified into what they are.”

 

The film won’t start shooting until January, but reports are that the early casting is because the new Solo will have a cameo in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which is now shooting. That film is said to be set between “Episode III” and “Episode IV.” Reps for Ehrenreich didn’t get back to us.

Michael is Coming Home! Blumhouse is Co-Producing the New HALLOWEEN — With John Carpenter Onboard!

Just like its unstoppable villain Michael Myers, it seems the HALLOWEEN film franchise — which launched in 1978 with John Carpenter’s original classic and spawned seven sequels as well as a remake with its own sequel — was destined to come back to life again.

 

We’re thrilled to announce that Michael has found a new home at last — thanks to the efforts of Blumhouse founder/CEO Jason Blum, HALLOWEEN franchise producer Malek Akkad, Miramax and Trancas International Films, who have just announced a team-up of historic proportions to bring a new HALLOWEEN to the big screen.

 

But hang on for the best part…

 

Tonight’s press gathering included a surprise appearance by none other than the father of HALLOWEEN himself, John Carpenter, who took the stage to confirm that he’s officially signed onto the new film as Executive Producer and Creative Consultant (Blum describes him as “Godfather” of the project), which bodes very well that the film will bring the franchise back in line with his original vision.

 

“HALLOWEEN needs to return to its traditions,” Carpenter said. “I feel like the movies have gotten away from that… Michael is not just a human being; he’s a force of nature, like the wind. That’s what makes him so scary.”

 

“HALLOWEEN is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies,” Blum said, “and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give Halloween fans the movie they deserve.”

 

While details are still limited at this early stage, Blum did reveal that the film would be produced on a modest budget… and Carpenter says that’s the way it should be.

 

“We made the original HALLOWEEN for very little money,” he added. “At heart it’s just a good, scary story, and that’s why it works. 38 years later, I’m going to help to try to make the tenth sequel the scariest of them all.”

 

But we’re still not done… did we mention that Carpenter may also be composing the film’s music? Negotiations are still in progress on that, so we can’t say it’s a done deal… but it looks very promising.

 

Carpenter has already been enjoying a major career renaissance with the cult success of his two LOST THEMES albums, which in turn sparked his first-ever tour of live performances with a full band, including his son and fellow composer Cody Carpenter (who would definitely be contributing to HALLOWEEN’s music, if the deal works out). So it looks like the stars have aligned perfectly for this project.

 

[Note: Carpenter recently re-recorded the HALLOWEEN theme for a new EP slated for June 17 release, along with new versions of the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE FOG and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 themes.]

Legendary Pictures has tapped John Boyega, one of today’s most talented rising stars, the lead role for the second installment of its PACIFIC RIM franchise.  The film, which is targeting a 4th Quarter start date is rapidly taking shape as a key project on Legendary’s upcoming slate with Boyega playing the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film.

The project will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham. Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and del Toro will produce the action adventure film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle. Cale Boyter will serve as the film’s executive producer.

 

Pacific Rim was in no way a visionary, groundbreaking film, but it's one of my go to feel good movies, and I've been following the bumpy pre-production process for the sequel for a while. Sometimes you just need to watch giant robots and aliens kick the snot out of each other for a few hours.  Really pleased with the addition of John to the cast.
