Interview with Julie Kuchařová

A few weeks ago, I received a voicemail from my friend Julie, worried, saying that she needed to talk to me. Upon calling back, I heard some pretty amazing news that was not only surprising but indescribably astonishing for my friend.

It was a Thursday morning when I visited Julie’s waterfront apartment in Lake Worth, Florida. She scurried to put on clothes and answer the door, so she could give me one of those hugs that are actually squeezes, as a way of saying I’ve missed you. Julie Kuchařová, also known as Julie, had just been signed to Ford models.

Just a little under 5’9″, she isn’t exactly the typical model height, but standing in front of the fridge looking for food to make brunch, Julie stood as tall as any model. Conversing over scrambled eggs and fruit yogurt, I asked Julie about the trepidation of her new journey. Kuchařová will be headed to New York City to live in dorms and should be staying until the end of fashion week. Yes, the annual Mercedes-Benz fashion week.

Q: “So why New York?”

A: “It’s the opportunity of a life time, it’s a great way to meet people and travel the world. Also, Ford is one of the most artistic agencies, and it’ll help me reach my goal.”

Only in brief instances do I recollect the fact that I had attended art school with her, she has definitely not given up those skills. Sipping over my chai tea with almond milk which she made, we pressed on.

Q: “So where do you think you’ll be in 15 years?”

A: “I don’t know… I don’t know where I’ll be, it’s a long time, I just like to take things as they come.”

Q: “So which model(s) do you look up to?”

A: “Coco Rocha, she’s a dancer who also models, and she’s awesome! She seems like a down to earth person and she has interests aside from modeling.”

“Interests do go a long way” I thought as we spoke. It became more apparent that she had not packed, and I made a suggestion that she could pack as we did the interview. To which she replied, “It’ll probably be done at the last minute,” which didn’t seem out of character for her. Julie is a bit of a character herself, and has a certain spontaneity that would drive a normal person insane. From the kitchen, we moved on to her bathroom where she was styling before going out. As she put on her Kérastase, we continued talking about her experiences working with Zodiac models, and how it got her to Ford. “It’s not easy,” she stated. I had not doubted her, considering the fact that she has a gorgeous face, speaks German, Czech and a little bit of Spanish. The girl is a rarity.

Q: “What is the scariest thing about modeling?”

A: “The scariest thing would be not knowing what to expect, and you never know how you’re going to stand out because there are so many people out there and I don’t wanna get lost in the industry.”

Obscurity would be a scary thought; model career spans aren’t known for their longevity, and indeed beauty does fade, but this girl is way too talented and skilled for such a thing to happen. As of right now, Julie is at the beginning of a life-changing stage in her youth and SiHK Brothers is right behind her. With training, shows, castings and all the bells and whistles ahead of her, one can only hope for the best. As I took my leave, I informed her of the work SiHK Brothers was planning for the summer, so perhaps the next brunch might just be in Manhattan. Stay fierce my dear.
