Theo James is One "Golden Hump" Day Hottie

By Jocelyn Vena

Theo James can arrest us anytime he wants. The "Golden Boy" star first caught America’s attention thanks to his pivotal season-one role on "Downton Abbey." Now, he’s keeping us tuning in week after week playing a very hot cop on the small screen. That sounds like enough cred to name him this week’s Hump Day Hottie, don’t you think?

Check out this dreamy photo of Theo, and keep reading for more details about him!

post-20251-0-1446085940-11435_thumb.jpg

Vital stats: The English hottie, 28, grew up in Oxford and then went on to study philosophy at the University of Nottingham and trained for his acting career at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Where you might have already seen him: Theo starred in perhaps the greatest “Downton Abbey” episode of them all. You know, the one where he plays the super-hot Turkish diplomat Mr. Pamuk, who deflowers Mary and dies in the process, totally changing her life in every way possible. Yeah, that guy.

His other credits include very British parts in other very British projects, including “Bedlam,” “Room at the Top” and “The Inbetweeners Movie.” He’s also taken a stab at playing the undead in “Underworld: Awakening.”

Why you should take notice of him now: He’s headlining his very own CBS show, “Golden Boy.” On it, he plays a very motivated young cop with a very long name, Walter William Clark Jr., who goes on to become the youngest police commissioner in New York City, ever.

So, how did he prepare for his role? “Just by being in the city and, as clichéd as that sounds, hanging out with the people. New York cops are very specific in terms of the way they talk and the way they handle themselves,” he told the New York Times. "All these cliches that, as an Englishman, I thought were from a bygone era or were a bit of poetic license with cop shows—the more you hang out with them, the more you realize how real that jargon is.

Excuse us while we go scouting the streets of the Big Apple for officers that look like Theo to teach us all that, um, jargon.

Actor Theo James: 'Plastic Makes Me Sick'

By Gerri Miller

February 26, 2013

post-20251-0-1446086138-81984_thumb.jpg

"I try to use public transport, always. My obsession is plastic packaging. It makes me sick, all the waste. Everything about it disappoints me," says Theo James, star of the new CBS cop drama "Golden Boy." The set isn't as green as he'd like. "They do try and make an effort, but there is a lot of plastic packaging and forks and paper cups."

The native of Oxford, England relocated to New York — and adopted an American accent — to play the "Golden Boy" titular star, a young man who has rapidly risen through the NYPD ranks to become the youngest Police Commissioner in history, and tells his story, seen in flashbacks, to a writer. "What I liked about this story is the development of a single, ruthless person," says James. "You see his journey. I think he comes from a very dark place. He's from a crime family and he had a choice whether or not to do that and he chose the other direction. He's smart. There was some abuse that went on and that fuels him. He wants to disassociate himself from that part of his life."

James appeared in the movie "Underworld: Awakening" and the British series "Bedlam," but is best known for his brief appearance in season one of "Downton Abbey" as the doomed young Turk, Kemal Pamuk. "I had 20 minutes of screen time, having sex and dying. Rather salacious," he says. He hasn't seen the third season, but is a fan of the show. "I knew that it was going to be great."

His "Golden Boy" liaisons are not lethal, but are noteworthy. "The main one happens toward the end of the season and that is a significant thing for him because he's a lone wolf. He opens up to this girl and it changes everything for him and not in a good way," he says of a relationship with a journalist.

James, who'd actually considered becoming a cop post-college, took the immersion approach to playing a New York detective, working with a dialogue coach and speaking with an American accent from the moment he got in the van to ride to the set until he wrapped for the day. He found the Big Apple similar to London. "Six months in New York and I'm in love with the city and everything to do with it," he raves.

If "Golden Boy," which premieres Feb. 26, is a hit, he might find himself playing the same role for years, which is "completely unheard of" in Britain. "Normally you do six episodes and it takes three months max. I obsessed with that a bit," he admits. "I thought, 'Am I signing my life away?' But if it's successful enough to run that long I shouldn't be complaining!"

'Divergent' has found its 'Four'! Theo James talks about starring in the next big YA franchise

By Sara Vilkomerson

March 15, 2013

post-20251-0-1446086375-8843_thumb.jpg

Finally! Divergent has found its male lead! Theo James has been cast as Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton in Neil Burger’s (Limitless) big screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s bestselling novel.

There’s been an awful lot of speculation as to who would play the mysterious Dauntless instructor opposite Shailene Woodley, who plays fierce heroine Beatrice Prior, when production gets going later this spring.

You might recognize James from CBS’s Golden Boy or from season 1 of Downton Abbey (he played the handsome man who died in Lady Mary’s bed.) “As a fan of Divergent, I am thrilled to have been chosen for the role of Four and to be a part of such a phenomenal story,” James tells EW in an exclusive statement. “As an actor, I am excited to explore and play this incredibly complex and mysterious character. Director Neil Burger is a remarkably visionary filmmaker. Along with the incredibly talented Shailene Woodley, we are looking forward to the fantastic adventure of bringing this beloved book to life on the big screen for all the fans.”

“Theo is not only an incredibly talented actor, he is also who we envisioned as Four when reading Veronica’s novel which has taken the world by storm,” says Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairmen of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group in a joint statement. “As we continue to develop the film, the studio remains committed to providing fans with a movie adaptation that stays as true to the book as possible and we are confident that we have done so with our selection of Shailene and Theo in the leading roles.

Why such a long wait? Eric Feig, Lionsgate president of production says in a statement: “We took our time to find the right actor to fill the role of Four, and Theo is definitely the perfect fit. Veronica has crafted a truly iconic character in Four and we cannot wait to begin production and bring him and this story to life for millions of fans around the world.”

This nicely adds to a cast that includes Die Hard‘s Jai Courtney, Zoe Kravitz and Maggie Q.Kate Winslet reportedly is in talks as well.

'Golden Boy' Canceled: CBS Series Not Renewed For Season 2

5/10/2013

post-20251-0-1446085862-16493_thumb.jpg

CBS' "Golden Boy" has been canceled.

Starring Theo James and Chi McBride, the series -- which debuted to 10.56 million viewers -- has seen mediocre ratings throughout its first season, bringing in between 7-10 million viewers per episode. "Golden Boy" was truly on the bubble between cancellation and renewal.

"Cop dramas are pretty much as old as television itself," McBride, who plays Detective Don Owen, said of the series ahead of its premiere. "But the difference is that this is more about relationships than just the case of the week. The writers do a pretty good job of balancing the procedural and character development. That's the greatest difference in these shows."

In addition to "Golden Boy," CBS also canceled "CSI: NY," "Vegas" and "Rules of Engagement" along with the previously canceled freshman series "Made In Jersey" and "Partners."

Divergent’s Shailene Woodley and Theo James on Ferris-Wheel Stunts

and Hunger GamesComparisons

By Julie Miller

Yesterday, Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James took Comic-Con by storm, premiering footage from their futuristic, adrenaline-fueled film at the San Diego Convention Center. But first, the duo, who play love interests onscreen in the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling young-adult novel, sat down with your blogger to discuss the dangerous stunts they had just completed on set in Chicago.

Before production began, both actors spent a month training for the physical challenges required of the big-screen adaptation, which details the grueling initiation process that Woodley’s character endures as she tries to join the “dauntless” group in a future society that divides people by their personality traits. James—the handsome British actor best known to us as Kemal Pamuk, the ill-fated Turkish diplomat who died suddenly in Lady Mary’s boudoir on Downton Abbey—did many of his own stunts, learning a hybrid style of fighting designed by the movie’s stunt coordinators and even severely injuring one its stuntmen.

“I had a fight scene, which happened very quickly,” he said. “It was, like, six guys coming at me doing various things. And unfortunately, one of the guys ended up getting 25 stitches in his face, which was not great, and I felt very guilty about it.” While Woodley did not fend off six attackers on set, she did do enough of her own stunts to injure herself. “I fell off a train and got two hernias,” the Golden Globe–nominated Descendants actress recalled nonchalantly.

“And a black eye,” James reminded her.

“I tried to do as many stunts as they would let me,” said Woodley. “I got to zip-line, which is pretty fun. I didn’t get to do the whole distance, but I got to do part of it. I got to be, like, 40 feet up over Chicago streets. We got to climb a Ferris wheel, [which] was not as cool as it seems. There was a ladder at about 45 degrees, and we were essentially just climbing the ladder. But it was a full moon, a super moon, so it was cool.“ When asked if the Ferris-wheel stunt was for a romantic, Notebook-type love scene, Woodley and James laughed.

“We were 69-ing on the top,” joked James.

“That was actually the most intense stunt work in the film,” she laughed. “It was really tricky to figure out.”

The pair also told us how they felt about all the Hunger Games comparisons that Divergent is already receiving and what, if anything, audience members should expect when they enter theaters next March.

“I don’t think anyone should have expectations,” Woodley said. “People compare us to the Hunger Games and think that’s a compliment. They’ve done an amazing job. Expectations always screw with you, though. Visually it is very different from Hunger Games and other young-adult franchises. Our D.P. and director really created a new world.”

“And also, when you see the trailers and stuff, I think that will answer the questions. It is quite unique,” James added, before making Woodley laugh one last time. “Watch—it comes out, and it is actually just like The Hunger Games. Shot for shot.”

Theo James keeps a low profile while leaving the Trump Soho Hotel on Saturday afternoon (August 24) in New York City.

The 28-year-old British actor is set to present the first look at his new, highly-anticipated film Divergentalongside co-star Shailene Woodley during the pre-show at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25.

“I just went at it hard, to be honest, because I thought that’s how she wanted it,” Theo recently told MTVof his first on-screen kiss with Shai. “I thought to assuage any awkwardness I would just go for it. She was kind of batting away my hands. It was kind of nice because we had Miles [Teller] as Peter literally in the background as we were kissing. He was making hissing noises which actually added to the sexuality.”
