Meyer is the daughter of Ronald Meyer, President and CEO of Universal Studios, and his first wife, Ellen. Her stepfather, from her mother's re-marriage, is Rabbi David Baron (head of the Temple Shalom for the Arts),and her stepmother, from her father's re-marriage, is Kelly Chapman. She got her start in jewelry making alongside her grandmother, Edith Meyer, who taught her the basics of making enamel jewelry when she was just six years old. As a young adult, Meyer studied Psychology at Syracuse University, then went to work for several fashion houses in the public relations departments, first for Giorgio Armani and later for Ralph Lauren.

Meyer returned to her jewelry making roots in 2004 when, frustrated by a search for a leaf charm for a necklace, she decided to make her own. After taking several jewelry making classes and consulting with other jewelers, Meyer designed her trademark leaf-shaped 18-karat gold charm, which to her represents "turn[ing] over a new leaf".Though Meyer has extensive Hollywood connections—her father is Universal Studios President Ron Meyer; her husband is actor Tobey Maguire—her jewelry made its national debut when a stylist picked out one of Meyer's leaf pendants for Jennifer Aniston to wear in The Break-Up. The exposure led to Meyer founding her own company, Jennifer Meyer Jewelry, and her line of rings, charms, pendants, and necklaces is distributed through such luxury stores as Barneys New York, Roseark in Los Angeles, California, and Maxfield in Beverly Hills, California. She was named "2007 Jeweler of the Year" in the Us Magazine "Hot Hollywood Style" issue. Her heart-shaped locket adorns the neck of Kirsten Dunst's character Mary Jane Watson as a gift from her boyfriend Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) in Spider-Man 3.

Meyer met Tobey Maguire in 2003 while Maguire was shooting the movie Seabiscuit at Universal Studios, and became engaged in April 2006. Their daughter Ruby Sweetheart Maguire was born November 10, 2006. Ruby's middle name comes from a childhood nickname of Meyer's given to her by her grandmother, who died a few months before Ruby's birth. Meyer and Maguire married on September 3, 2007, in Kona, Hawaii. Their second child, son Otis Tobias Maguire, was born on May 8, 2009. Meyer is Jewish and occasionally wears a Kabbalah bracelet placed on her "as a protection" by a friend of hers. Meyer and Maguire are both Los Angeles Lakers fans and can frequently be seen courtside at Lakers home games.

Edit: Has 2 sisters, Sarah and Carson and 1 brother, Eli.

You're more than welcome, kat  I love Jen's jewellery line, it's very pricey, but, it's worth every cent. The detail is so beautiful and elegant. I'd be insuring the piece, for sure :) I just love her in general.

Carson’s Corner: Jennifer Meyer Jewelry

Our fashion columnist interviews her big sister about her jewelry line and collaborating with J.Crew

I have looked up to my sister Jennifer Meyer for as long as I can remember. She’s 16 years older than me, and watching her bring her dream of designing jewelry to life has been inspiring to say the least. But there’s never been a doubt in my mind that her great taste would contribute to her success in life. And I may be biased, but now I know I’m not alone in thinking every one of her pieces is pure perfection. Jen received first runner-up in the 2012 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards— a huge honor! — and she has just recently designed a few pieces in collaboration with J.Crew. She named each piece after a woman in our family, meaning one of the necklaces is called the Carson. So the other day we got to talking about everything from getting a business started to working with Jenna Lyons and the J.Crew team.

CARSON MEYER: I remember coming over to your place when you first started and your office was the living room floor. You taught me how to package a necklace without it getting tangled by leaving the end of it outside the bag. Almost eight years later, a lot has changed. What was it like starting a company on your own?

JENNIFER MEYER: When you start a company, you can’t worry about what it’s going to become. You have to be focused on what you’re doing in the moment. In the beginning I did everything on my own, from the pricing to the packaging to the FedEx-ing. You need to be focused on the day-to-day, not the future. The more you focus on that, the more potential you have to be successful in the future.

CM: What prompted you to enter the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition?

JM: I saw what it did for other brands that I truly admire. I knew it was an incredible boost to anybody’s business. To work with Vogue and the CFDA team is inspirational beyond words. It was something I always wanted to do and I finally felt ready.

CM: Do you have any favorite pieces you have designed?

JM: The first piece I designed, a gold leaf necklace, is special to me. I chose a leaf as a symbol of new beginnings, of “turning over a new leaf,” which was, for me, launching my company. As women, I feel like we’re always beginning something new — a new relationship, a friendship, job, having children. It was a reminder to me that new beginnings are exciting. Also, I wanted a cool leaf necklace, and I couldn’t find one. Ha!

CM: I know you have always been a big fan of J.Crew. Did you have a favorite previous collaboration?

JM: I loved last year’s CFDA/J.Crew collaboration, with Joseph Altuzarra’s elegant separates inspired by the glamour of the Riviera, Pamela Love’s rocker-cool denim, and Creatures of the Wind’s ’60s-influenced prints and patchwork. The day after the CFDA announcements, I found myself in Jenna Lyons’ office with her design team discussing the process. They guided me at every turn and were kind beyond belief. I had never designed a costume jewelry collection, so it was all a new experience.

CM: Where do you go for inspiration?

JM: My 19-year-old sister, of course!

CM: And where is your favorite space to work?

JM: My office. I work with awesome girls who inspire me constantly.

CM: How did you decide to name the J.Crew collaboration after the girls in our family?

JM: I live for my family and nothing is more important to me, so why not?

CM: I know that one of the many reasons people love your jewelry is because it can be worn with jeans and a tee shirt or on the red carpet. Do you strategize for versatility in your designs?

JM: To me, jewelry should be something you never have to take off. Who has time for that? All women are busy. I want jewelry to be meaningful, a part of you and your body and everyday life.
