He's modelled for Prada and Dior

Down-to-earth Boro fan now has his sights on Topman

Being camera shy was never an issue for Rhys Pickering but never did he dream of stealing the limelight on international catwalks in front of some of the world’s leading fashion designers.

The Norton 20-year-old never wanted to be a model and, just over a year ago, was still unsure of his career goals.

The former Crooksbarn Primary School pupil lived on Teesside until he was 12, before moving to Dubai and then Switzerland with his parents, Jonathan and Tina and sister, Laura.

It was during a gap year in Switzerland when an opportunity arose that was set to change Rhys’ career vision in a way nobody had expected.

Model Rhys Pickering as a child

In November 2013, Rhys was encouraged to contact a modelling agency.

Unsure at first, he took the advice and was scouted by his Barcelona-based mother agent, Reinaldo of Traffic Models who he met in January 2014.

He said: “I was on a gap year because I did not know what I wanted to do.

“I never had my heart set on being anything in particular when I was older. I just enjoyed media.

“I did not know anything about the modelling industry but I did a test shoot with them to see what I was like in front of a camera. We clicked straight away.”

Rhys soon became a familiar face across the globe, taking to the catwalk for high end labels including Dior and Chanel.

In fact, only two days into his modelling career in June last year, Rhys was backed by Prada as an exclusive for their show in Milan Fashion Week.

A week later, he took to the catwalk for Paris Fashion Week.

He said: “Louis Vuitton took a liking to me and they backed me for their show. I opened and closed it.

“I was very nervous for my first show but for my second show I was more nervous. I was really excited too. It was one of the best moments of my life.”

In October last year, Rhys visited India to be part of Louis Vuitton’s global campaign.

The Boro fan has also been involved in this year’s fashion weeks in the world’s fashion capitals, London, Paris and Milan.

Only last week, Rhys recalls being in three different countries in 24 hours.

Despite walking alongside big names such as Cara Delevingne, he said: “There are moments when I want to stop and relax and do a more normal career but it is an amazing opportunity.

“I need to work as hard as I can.”

Rhys can be spotted in GQ magazine and on posters across the globe in places such as Dubai, Singapore and even on the side of trams in Hong Kong.

Mum, Tina, said: “He has always been interested in computers and the media side of things.

“We could have seen him behind the camera but for him to be in front of it was not what we expected.

“We are really proud.”

Rhys has just done his first shoot for high street brand H&M - and hopes to one day model for Topman.

He added: “For me it came out of the blue.

“I am lucky that my agent believed in me from the start.

“It has taken me across the world but I am still a Boro boy. I could not have done all this without all of the support from family and friends.”
