maddog107 Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 why would you want 2x XFX Ge Force 7900 GTX XXX, first of all this is an old model which takes a LOT of space and power. The XFX GeForce 7950 GX2 M570 1GB DDR3 XXX will allow you a quad SLI setup for a few hundred dollars more (600ish each), and will run circles around this setup. Not to mention it takes up less power and space then the older generation.Memory Clock: 1.55 GHz Clock rate: 570 MHz Memory: 1 GB Monitor: 30" LCD DELL UltraSharp 3007WFP ~$1800 but you can get it for $1600 if you shop around. 2560x1600 Pixels rez and 11ms response.Hard drive: Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA ~$200 this is for your boot drive since its the fastest drive on market. and for storage 2 x Seagate Barracuda 750GB and you can raid them through your MB Quote
schadenfreude Posted September 16, 2006 Author Posted September 16, 2006 Maximum PC says Quad SLI is only worthwhile if you have 30" monitor, but the current 30" on the market aren't fast enough. I think it has to do with the refresh rate or something."Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA ~$200 this is for your boot drive"Is 10,000 RPM still labelled as SATA?I always thought that 10,000 RPM is already SCIS. But now 10k is on SATA you can even get the model with a clear top on the HD so you can see the drive head moving back and forth (assuming u have a window on your case) but its a bit more money, but considering this is an Dream machien then money aint a thangand with regards to 30" response rates, well the issue with big LCDs are ghosting of images in gamming. But I was reading some reviews a while back and it seems that you dont experience it on the current generation dells or apples. I think anything under 16ms is sufficient not to see ghosting Quote
schadenfreude Posted September 17, 2006 Author Posted September 17, 2006 "considering this is an Dream machien then money aint a thang"Not quite so.If that's indeed true, wouldn't you have recommended better?Like 2 X 150 GB 10,000 rpm Raptor as boot drive, plus 3 X 750 GB 7,200 rpm Seagate Barracuda as storage, just so that you can max out the 2 TB limit? As much as it is a dream machine, I am not going to get a 4G RAM for it. maddog107 Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Well the reason I didnt recomend 2x10kpm ones would be cuz then you would have to raid, and since your using the motherboard to raid it it takes CPU cycles up to ~5% so in fact it would slow your system down. If you really wanted to make it fast you would have to do a RAID 5 config in which case you would need at least 3 10krpm and get a dedicated raid controller card like a 3ware 9550sx (i think thats the model) which would put you back anywhere from like 600-1000+ bucks depending on how many ports you want (from 4-16 SATA ports). And 4GBs aint nessesary right now, but say you were ever to get this machine and say you could wait till december, you could get the quad core intel core 2 chips and then 4GBs + Windows Vista and that would be a nice setup. But if you aint using Vista you dont need 4gbs. Quote
schadenfreude Posted September 19, 2006 Author Posted September 19, 2006 Here's how Maximum PC do it.2 X 150 GB 10,000 rpm Raptor as boot drive (RAID 0)3 X 750 GB 7,200 rpm Seagate Barracuda as storage (RAID 5)They say they get 140 MB/s as boot speed. Fast enough? Quote
maddog107 Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 you can always do better and with an iRAM you could do it faster too, but i dont like volatile storage thus the reason i didnt recomend it Quote
schadenfreude Posted September 22, 2006 Author Posted September 22, 2006 UDM will have to wait maybe 1 year later. Here's why:-Budget issues-Vista isn't out yet-Conroe Quadro isn't out yet tooWith the amount of money spend, I think I should have Core 4 Quadro (L2 8MB cache),instead a Core 2 Extreme (L2 4MB cache).THE RAM will, of course, be upgraded to DDR2/1111.You are right, I think I am going to have to upgrade the GPUs.2 X XFX 9750 GTX2 XXX The XFX-overclocked GTX2 is already out, I just saw it in store yesterday!
