Born on February 24, 1965, in Boulder, Colorado, Kristin Davis' parents split up shortly after her birth. Kristin moved to Columbia, South Carolina, with her psychology professor father, when he transferred to a local university. Though she has three stepsisters from her father's first marriage, she was raised mostly as an only child, which she claims led to her independent streak.

Drama first piqued Kristin's interest at the age of 10, when she had a part in a community theater production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But in the Bible belt, where she was raised, her acting aspirations took a backseat to other extracurricular activities. "There was always a lot of alcohol," Davis has said, describing an addiction to alcohol that started early on and persisted. She has been sober for over a decade.

As a child, Kristin headed to New York often to see theatrical plays with her family, and she felt the pull of the city early on, finding its buzz both exciting and scary. Not surprisingly, she eventually attended Rutgers University in New Jersey and later moved to New York upon graduation. She set her sights on classical and contemporary theater, though she took on occasional commercial work.

During this time, Davis suffered through the age-old Hollywood actress clich -- the real-life role of a waitress waiting for a break. Nevertheless, she soon landed a role in a regional production of Much Ado About Nothing, which gave her a confidence boost and pushed her to continue chasing her dream.

When the New York writers' strike hit the Big Apple in the early 1980s, it didn't take much to convince Davis to move to sunny Los Angeles. There, she and a friend managed to open a yoga studio, a passion and hobby she continues to this day.

After making her film debut in the 1987 film, Doom Asylum, Kristin landed steady gigs on the daytime soap General Hospital and N.Y.P.D Mounted (both in 1991). Two years later, she began her impressive string of TV guest appearances with roles in The Larry Sanders Show and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

In 1995, Davis starred in the made-for-TV movie Alien Nation: Body and Soul, and appeared in an episode of ER as well as the Hugh Grant film Nine Months. That same year, she joined the cast of the popular primetime drama Melrose Place, where Kristin gained recognition and notoriety as diabolic rich girl, Brooke Armstrong Campbell.

Although (or because) she nailed the character to a tee, Davis was written out of the show in 1996, apparently because Melrose Place fans hated Brooke so much. But thankfully, Davis made an impression on the show's producer, Darren Starr, who eventually played an important role in bringing Candace Bushnell's novel Sex and the City to the small screen.

But before her role on Sex and the City, Davis starred in the 1997 made-for-TV movie A Deadly Vision and enjoyed appearances on The Single Guy and Seinfeld. In addition to appearing in Larry David's Sour Grapes and the short film, Traveling Companion, she made sure 1998 would be an important year by landing a role in HBO's Sex and the City.

With the possibility of stable work, Davis returned to New York and was initially considered for the lead role of Carrie Bradshaw, which ultimately went to Sarah Jessica Parker. Kristin Davis took on the role of Charlotte York, the show's romantically prude art dealer, and made a name for herself among a cast of attractive women. The series became a huge international hit and made stars of actresses Parker, Davis, Kim Cattrall, and Cynthia Nixon.

Davis also used her newfound fame to help charities like the B-list, which funds female candidates running for public office.

Far from resting on her laurels, Kristin Davis starred in the 1999 made-for-TV movie Atomic Train, and a year later she appeared in an episode of Friends, the film Blacktop, and the made-for-TV movie Take Me Home: The John Denver Story.

In 2001, Davis continued this frantic pace, taking on the role of narrator in the TV series When I Was a Girl and starring in the made-for-TV movies Three Days and Someone to Love.

kristin davis fights rumors

In February 2004, Sex and the City came to end after six successful seasons. But along with success came constant tabloid rumors, such as the ones about on-set tension and catfights among the cast members, as well as Davis' often high-profile relationships (she reportedly dated Jeff Goldblum and Alec Baldwin).

Nevertheless, any on-set tension did little to stunt the series' phenomenal success, with the cast sharing the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2002 and 2004. Davis received her share of recognition, with a Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Golden Globe and Emmy nomination in 2004.

Despite plans of making a Sex and the City film being scrapped, Davis is keeping busy with her own projects. In 2004, Davis appeared in an episode of Will & Grace, starred in the made-for-TV movie The Winning Season, and lent her voice to the "Miss Spider" character in Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends.

Davis is apparently working on developing a series on HBO, and is set to star in the film Houseboat (2005) and the family comedy The Shaggy Dog (2005), with Tim Allen. Kristin Davis splits her time between New York and Los Angeles.
